MYTH Gallery x Astoria

04.06.2024 – 09.06.2024

Venue: Hotel Astoria. Saint Petersburg, 39 Bolshaya Morskaya

Participants: Ulyana Podkorytova

The Slavic shirt is a wooden object made by Ulyana Podkorytova. It is made of lemekh, a special material for the roofs of temples in ancient Russian architecture, and was part of the multimedia project "Tamotka", created in 2021 for the first exhibition in the GES-2 House of Culture and V-A-C foundation.

Ulyana Podkorytova is an artist who researches identity issues in the era of globalization based on studies of different cultures during her travels and art residences. Ulyana is building an internal mythology based on the transfer of the folklore of the Russian North and post-folklore (primarily Internet folklore) into the present using different media such as video art, objects, graphics and photography.

The video work "Tamotka" pays tribute to the folklore traditions of the northern regions. It is a modern fairy tale about the future of nature and technology. Dressed in wooden armour made of lemekh, the heroine looks like an invulnerable hero. But in fact, this armour of fragile material does not protect its owner at all. Ulyana proposes to reflect on the vulnerability of nature to global disasters in her video work "Tamotka".

Works created by Ulyana Podkorytova have institutional recognition, as they are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the Multimedia Art Museum (Moscow), the Museum of contemporary art "Garage" (Moscow), the Aksenov Family Foundation (Moscow) and in private collections.

The exhibition of the work in the interior of the hotel "Astoria" was prepared with the support of the MYTH Gallery and the fair of contemporary art "1703".
