Works by Lyudmila Baronina and PROVMYZA art group at the exhibition"Undark Ages: Tales of Medievalism and Academia" at GES-2
16.11.2025
Location: GES-2. Moscow, 15 Bolotnaya Embankment
Dates: 14.11.2025 – 14.05.2026
The exhibition "Undark Ages: Tales of Medievalism and Academia," exploring the influence of artistic heritage on contemporary art, has opened at the GES-2 House of Culture.
This large-scale project examines the imagery of historical eras—Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the Middle Ages—in the works of masters from the past and present. The exhibition brings together painting and graphic art from Classicism, Academicism, and Art Nouveau of the 18th–20th centuries, Russian icons, Gothic sculpture, and works by contemporary artists: installations, sculptures, tapestries, and video art.
The exhibition invites viewers to juxtapose artistic forms characteristic of Antiquity and the Middle Ages with their reflections in current artistic practice. In doing so, it challenges enduring stereotypes that posit Ancient Greece as an undisputed aesthetic benchmark, while the Middle Ages are conversely viewed as a period of cultural stagnation.
Among other works presented at GES-2 are the 2008 piece "Despair" by the art group PROVMYZA and a new installation by Lyudmila Baronina, "The Unicorn Hunt, or The New Fabric of Time."
